Hasrimy, a freelance web designer based in from Malaysia with a very promising portfolio.

Hasrimy, a freelance web designer based in from Malaysia with a very promising portfolio.

Please tell us more about yourself

I love web standards. I love design with CSS! I am trying to bring web standards to Malaysia, create awareness to the public – let them know what the criteria of a good website are. It does not only depends on design, but it must have validation.

Hi all! Thank you so much to Kailoon for giving me this great opportunity to be featured in his website! My name is Hasrimy, the founder of hasrimy.com. My forte is more on the web design concept and creating ideas on how website can really benefits the user as well as to improve the business and also reach the targeted customer easily.

Currently, I am dedicating my entire time concentrating on web design and web application together with my partner (he is in charge more on the programming and coding side). The idea is to expand our services widely and provides a convenient environment to our customers by offering a one stop solution centre.

I have wide experiences in this field. I started from a small design house to a reputable GLC company. I also learned a lot when I lectured in a few colleges and private universities.

How long have you been in this field and why?

I have been involving in this field for more than 6 years. Why? Because I have a deep passion on it. It is part of me. It is all started as a hobby. I am very keen into arts since school and I have spent most of my time to draw each day without fail. I also look at it as a therapy for me – as escapism from all the stresses and pressures.

How did you market yourself in the beginning of your design career? How about now?

I started from small. At the very beginning – I have to chase people to be my client. Offer them my services (very cheap price!) and have to convince them that I can do a better job. Gradually, I started to create my portfolio. And now, I have a strong portfolio to sell myself!

After that – from word of mouth and client’s recommendations – then I’m getting more jobs in hand. From there I created “Hasrimy.com” – purposely to showcase my work to my clients and indirectly also as a reference website for my students to learn CSS! From there I got listed in CSS Mania (a second Malaysian who was listed there ; and people started to recognize my existence.

Every day I will improve my design – every morning before I started my work, I will make sure I updated my ideas with the latest design technique by surfing webcreme, css mania, computer love, netdiver and other related sites.

Now I received a lot of request everyday through my website – local and also international; from people who would like to hire me for their web design, web applications, logo, and printed materials and so on. My website is the best ‘marketing personnel’ that work for me 24/7, 365 days, without fail!

What is the common challenge when dealing with a project (web)? How you came over the challenge?

The most challenging part is to convince the client with your concept. Of course idea is the most challenging part in any design. System is fixed, design is abstract. No matter how good is the design, if the client does not like it – it’s a total failure! So for me – understanding the client needs is the fundamental in developing ideas and concepts based on their requirements.

What your own define the “quality” or “complexity”?

Quality = satisfaction of work produced + client’s satisfactions
Complexity = strategy + dedication

How you see the freelance market in Malaysia?

I foresee that in the near future, there will be lots of Malaysian working from home aided with only small laptop and supported by Internet connection. That’s the reality and the trend is extending. Designers prefer to work on their own. They can earn more money and at the same time, gain more self- satisfaction.

For me, freelance market in Malaysia is getting bigger (from an online business view) and the world is getting smaller. Everything is within our fingertips. My business segmentation not only caters for local people but also I received a lot of request from UK, London, Taiwan, Singapore and Ireland. They are keen to approach our local market not mainly because our human resource is cheap, but the main factor that triggers their interest is our quality of work. It’s very hard to get a good web designer who really can design according to web standards…

Can you please briefly explain your workflow on a project?

My work flow is simple. First I will ask the client their requirements for the website. After that, I will proceed with some study and research. As a result of that, I will get back to my clients with my new propose ideas for them. If they are satisfied, then I will start with developing the whole website.

Any advice for someone who just starting out?

My advice is simple – no matter what you are doing, the most important thing is you must identified and develop your passion and interest first before proceed with what you are doing.

I like web design all the time, I always try to do something simple. There are many different kind of web site. From the beginning, I know nothing. I have to start from something really simple, step by step. I spend more time to do research on foreign and local web site. try to understand how they did it.
How you see the freelance market in Malaysia?

I’ve learn a lot during doing freelance. The freelance market in Malaysia have its own trend. Company prefer to look for bigger design studio rather than a freelancer. So, we need to have our own design style and try produce something different/unique.

The Poetic Prophet (AKA The SEO Rapper) is back with another marketing rap. This time he describes how web standards and proper design can affect the ranking and conversion of pages on your site.

Lyrics:
Your site design is the first thing people see
it should be reflective of you and the industry
easy to look at with a nice navigation
when you can’t find what you want it causes frustration
a clear Call to action to increase the temptation
use appealing graphics they create motivation
if you have animation
use with moderation
cause search engines can’t index the information
display the logos of all your associations
highlight your contact info that’s an obligation
create a clean design you can use some decoration
but to try to prevent any client hesitation
every page that they click should provide and explanation
should be easy to understand like having a conversation
when you design the style go ahead and use your imagination
but make sure you use correct color combinations
do some investigation, look at other organizations
but don’t duplicate or you might face a litigation
design done, congratulations but it’s time to start construction
follow these instructions when you move into production
your photoshop functions then slice that design
do your layout with divs make sure that it’s aligned
please don’t use tables even though they work fine
when it come to indexing they give searches a hard time
make it easy for the spiders to crawl what you provide
remove font type, font color and font size
no background colors, keep your coding real neat,
tag your look and feel on a separate style sheet
better results with xml and css
now you making progress, a lil closer to success
describe your doctype so the browser can relate
make sure you do it great or it won’t validate
check in all browsers, I do it directly
gotta make sure that it renders correctly
some use IE, some others use Flock
some use AOL, I use Firefox
title everything including links and images
don’t use italics, use emphasis
don’t use bold, please use strong
if you use bold that’s old and wrong
when you use CSS, you page will load quicker
client satisfied like they eating on a snicker
they stuck on your page like you made it with a sticker
and then they convert now that’s the real kicker
make you a lil richer, your site a lil slicker
design and code right man I hope you get the picture
what I’m telling you is true man it should be a scripture
if it’s built right you’ll be the pick of the litter
everyone will want to follow you like twitter
competition will get bitter and you’ll shine like glitter
if you trying to grow your company will get bigger
design and code right man can you get with it

Recently I am addicted to those animation in flash design so I search for some flash animation in Google. i like to watch animation in flash and series will be nice as it will have the noncontinuous story that you can follow. It is slightly different from anime that you watch currently. Sometimes you really can see the passion of the animator when you watch their product. The details, idea and creativity are spectacular. It is always nice and enjoyable to watch this kind of stuffs and it sometimes can inspired us and come out with something new.

Happy Tree Friends

Have you watch happyTreeFriend before? It is certified as Cartoon Violence (CV) and you are not allow to watch it if you are underage. “Watch on your own risk”: advice by Kai Loon. The way they present the animation is special but simple. It is nice and fun. The animation that I am going to introduce is another kind of style but also with simple storyline. It is related to our daily working life and sometimes we might also think of it. It help us to ‘express’ our feeling at that hard moments. How about you? Experienced it before in your daily life?

LowMorale By Monkeehub

LowMorale is a seried of animations showing a man in his work. how he see it from his point of view. There is no conversation or dialog in the animation but you can easily understand what he wish to tell us. The site also been featured by Macromedia in 2005. It is a product from Monkeehub which was found in 1979. From the description, I was told that the founder – Latih was drawing before he could walk … Can you believe that? I can’t even think when I was 4 … Maybe still playing with my shit on the bed …

LowMorale – The Music Video with flash

There is also a Music video based on LowMorale character. It is really nice … The animation already killing me… not even count in the professional level of the music and melody. I like it very much. I am still thinking how he do those effects with flash. I do not know more in flash but I think it is using masking, am I right? If you know how, please let me know, anyone? Flash master? Really wish to know …The combination of the animation, lyrics and melody are simply perfect. One thing, pay attention to the character emotion when he is singing. damn real and funny.

JCB by Nizlopi

There is also another site which you can find a nice song there. If you like it, you can purcahse the CD there also. The web design is also based on the same simple but nice pencil drawing with LowMorale. Well, this is all that I wish to share with you all today and I will keep posting some interesting stuffs related to design whether it is a web design, graphic design, flash animation or others that i might not yet find them. Personally, I do not in to 3D design, I prefer 2D graphic. Stubborn guy I am. But, the combination of 2D and 3D effects will always come out with something brilliant. For example, The USAVICH.TV. have fun!
