My take? leave your ego at your doorstep when you go to work.

If the client/boss tells you what they want or asks you what you think, tell them your opinion as a designer but that's as far as you go. Whether they decide to go with your suggestions is their decision and your job is to carry out their instructions regardless of whether you agree or not.

Easier said than done, because you'll need to emotionally distance yourself from your work, which might affect the quality. Basically a catch 22 situation.

Of course, not all clients/bosses are resistant to your creative input, at then end it all boils down to your people skills and luck.

Well in my opinion, what u say is right... but life isn't all the perfect for a designer.. Your experience with your boss/client.. i understand.. but as your client, they are paying you to achieve what they want, in the end of the day.. its still your work. I've used to have a boss cum creative director.. which ask me to design stuff.. then she'll do some little modification to it herself and then claim all the credit for herself.. thats even more fcked up.

I totally agree with what Cometh said... " If you master the art of convincing ppl to follow your idea/opinion without making them feel inferior which in other word feed their ego, I am sure you will be able to carry out with your design… " This is one valuable skill which took me almost forever to learn. But if u can achieve this u will have no problem doing what u feel like and at the same time convince any bosses or clients that your design works best for them.

Wow, still looking for that? I read your advertisement in jobstreets too. BTW, jobstreet isn't a good place to find quality person. You need "network" to find them. Jobstreet will only spam your mailbox :P Thanks dude! You understand my feeling about the codes!!! Hehe...

I think you like to work more by yourself than in a team--which is not bad. Because I myself work better alone; but sometimes having someone else to help you is a good idea. You might think you have the best design, but others can help you improve. :)

I think you are a talented designer. :)

I like your last paragraph! Of course we should always stand by our idea (baby!) :)

We do not have enough of that in our offices, which is why we continue to advertise for new positions with web designers... One minor challenge we face is that we have very few designers who can work on their concepts and see them through from start to finish...

We also understand how you feel about the code at night...
We are the same! :-)

Nice post by the way - well written...

I am having a final exam tomorrow and yet I am here leaving comment. LOL

Well, there is this fine line between following your own opinion and your client/boss opinion. Normally the client/boss factor would weight the most being that they are the ones who pay for the things that they want.

However, you can try to give suggestions and try to convince them why you think your design would be better for what they want. This of course you will need to do it in a way that it feed their ego. You know lah, Bosses do not like ppl to think they are ignorant on certain stuff. =p

If you master the art of convincing ppl to follow your idea/opinion without making them feel inferior which in other word feed their ego, I am sure you will be able to carry out with your design... =p

My two cents......

Cheers.......
