If the client/boss tells you what they want or asks you what you think, tell them your opinion as a designer but that's as far as you go. Whether they decide to go with your suggestions is their decision and your job is to carry out their instructions regardless of whether you agree or not. Your experience with your boss/client.. i understand.. but as your client, they are paying you to achieve what they want, in the end of the day.. its still your work. I've used to have a boss cum creative director.. which ask me to design stuff.. then she'll do some little modification to it herself and then claim all the credit for herself.. thats even more fcked up. I totally agree with what Cometh said... " If you master the art of convincing ppl to follow your idea/opinion without making them feel inferior which in other word feed their ego, I am sure you will be able to carry out with your design… " This is one valuable skill which took me almost forever to learn. But if u can achieve this u will have no problem doing what u feel like and at the same time convince any bosses or clients that your design works best for them.
