Time for the web round-up for June. Today is the final for Euro 2008. 45 minutes before the match start, I am here writing for this month my highly rated articles and web resources. In this month, I made a few updates for LD. I created a flickr group for LoonDesign, a web design news submission page and also the similar posts function in the end of every posts. Today, I just accept the first photo to the flickr group from stefany_1. Well, thanks. Let’s see what we have in June. I read quite a lot this month …

For me, I prefer fixed. Because of easier management due to huge of dynamic content in blogging, especially when using image. But, my boss prefer flexible. actually, I’m still ok with that. But, how to use flexible in blog, with a lot of shading in layout, different sizes of images in post and he said” flexible layout is web 2.0. what you say?

Hi all, another update for LD today. I have been working on this site to add in some extra functions. It is hard to choose which to use and which not to use. Finally, I back to basic. Think over what my purpose to run this site. What’s my readers want? How can I provide? I always say that know more about your readers is always a good way yo improve our blog content quality. In the process, I manage to learn something new and find something useful again, from the word wide web. Let’s see what’s new here.

Web Design News

I add in this new feature here to allow my readers get more web design related news. Besides, design only news also welcome. In other hand, whoever wish to promote or share their own or other’s articles will be always welcome. This take me about a day to finish it. I’ve tried out a few methods, but failed. I am not good in php. Since I am using wordpress. So, I back to it. I try to modify the comment.php and add in new input fields for extra info. I use Extra Comment Fields plugin from Nate Weiner. You can see there is a new section in the right sidebar. This also means that your submission will gain a link from here in every pages. Submit now if you want.

After that, play a round with css style. Done. The funny thing is, just right after I finished the modification. I notice there is a new entry by Collis in Nettus about this trick. However, I sticked to what I had did. I am using a page for it but they are using a post. But according to Collis, they will ask Joshua Blount to work out a complete wordpress plugin for this feature. So, wait and see…

Similar Post

I also add in the content related function to help you for navigation when searching for some topic you like. I know this is just a basic function. I didn’t use it before this because I feel that it is kind of spamming within my blog. But now, for the good purpose, I use it here.

Comments

Finally, I decided to separate the comments and trackbacks. It is now look better and clean. I think it is good for the readers who enjoy reading other’s comments and feedbacks. Besides, I also add in a math protection plugin for the spam battling purpose. I use Math Comment Spam Protection by Michael Woehrer..

Conclusion

After the update was done. I feel that it is nothing impossible, even thought when you are using wordpress. You can actually so whatever you want. Just think about what you want in your site/blog, then look for the wordpress plug-ins directory or just google it. You may find a dozen of solutions out there. Because, someone already think of it before you did. This is also the beauty of internet. You will keep motivated by those talented people out there. It is good IF one day, I can be the first who create something new for the community. Well, that’s all about it.

have a nice day!

The third official Webmaster Malaysia Gathering is on. This time, they move from KL to PJ - The Curve at Mutiara Damansara. I missed the first gathering because I still don’t know what the hell it that at that time. I did participate in the second gathering in KL Sentral. I got inspired from there. I also met some famous people there althought they don’t know about me. I still enjoy the event.

The Event And Venue

Webmaster Malaysia Gathering is brought to you by Webmaster Malaysia and sponsored by Exabytes.
Last time, the venue isn’t good enough. Most of the time the audience can’t listen to the speech given. This time, the pick a better location for the event. They manage to book The Apartment at The Curve.

The Members And Guests

Last time, we were glad to have Hanson Toh (Google Malaysia), Najib (Drupal) and Gobala for the presentation session. For the coming gathering, we’ve even have members like LiewCF and Alang, and few other great webmasters to speak in this event.

The Fee And Registration

The admission is still the same - FREE. There are only 40 seats for members. To participate, simply reply to this email (limcs@webmastermalaysia.com) with your name and phone number. I did it already. How about you? See you there!

My little Thought

Well, it is good to have such event. Webmaster can gather and share their experiences. I hope that 1 day I will be able to give a talk there to share some of my thoughts and knowledge in wordpress and css as well. Cheers!

Since the vectortuts was launched. I had just created a zooming icon using Illustrator. Then, I sent it to vectortuts. After they approved the concept. I start to write the full tutorial in details. Maybe I just forgot how to write a tutorial since I leave it out for a while. I spent 4 hours to finished the tutorial with a already finished result. I found that the hardest part is how we are going to present and explain the work flow step by step. So, readers will not get confused while following the tutorial. After I finished the writing, I re-check the whole thing and then submit to vectortuts. So, now I only need to wait for the publish of the tutorial. Relax ~ Besides, there is alo some changes for LD …

LoonDesign Flickr Group

Random Featured sites

You may notice this section long time ago. It is located on the top right eye chatching area. Yeah, I forgot to announce that. Initially, I wish to place whatever sites, design or great stuffs that I wish to share with you guys. But then, I think it is good also if you wish to share your great site with us. So, now, it is open to you guys who want to showcase his/her site here. Kindly drop me an email and I will check out your site and put it up if accepted. It will be displayed randomly and only 2 sites in a month for $50. First 2 sites are FREE. So, act fast.

LoonDesign featured in site galleries

From the beginning, I only wish to write some tutorials and get some traffics so that I can earn some pocket money from our local advertising company. End up, all of them seem like not so promising and having some “friendly fighting” among them. So, I quit. I go for paypost. I write whatever they offer. End up, I am having a “rojak (mixed)” content blog. I don’t like it. So, I changed. I stay focus on writing stuffs what related to my field - web design. I am sure that I made a correct decision. I am more happy to manage the site in this way and direction.

Now, I still write some paypost. The different is advertisers will look for me and I will also filter the topic they want. I will also reject the offer which is not related to my site or I think their products or services are not good. I always love to share good stuffs with my readers.

Below are some of the best of LD.

Anyone know what had happen to CSSVault website? I posted about my web design inspiration a few days ago and I received a comment from Dybcio, he told me that the site redirect to the Apple Gazette page. I double checked and what he was saying is right. CSSVault, used to be the web designer’s bets web gallery and inspiration. Now, become an Apple Gazette page, do anyone of you know what had just happen to them? It is kind of disappointed if the site has went down just like that.

This is how the site look alike before this.

Update - some history

Thanks to my reader - Dybcio again. Well, I just found that CSSVault sold by BloggyNetwork to HostGator Web Hosting for $100,000 on March.

According to them, this isn’t a simple purchase - it’s an investment. So, we all just wait and see what will happen next and also waiting for the site revamp soon. Cheers!

But the thing is, the purchase was on March of 2007 and now is middle of 2008. Anyone else can provide more recent update to us? Thanks!

Quite a long time I do not write a post here. Recently, I am busy in preparing some stuffs which is related to web design, hmm.. I think blog design is more suitable. Do you have ever think of this? You are doing web design or you are designing a blog all the while? Do you need me to explain what is the different? I think not necessary, right? I think I can say that blog design is categorized under web design, are you agree with me? Or, do you have other better title for them? or just use my WordPress Designer? hahah… okie.. continue reading and find it out.

Where to go?

As you can see, I am getting some freelance job recently and I also post them up in my portfolio page (some are still under development). You may notice that. I am doing stuff more related to blog design using WordPress. Is this a good sign? If you have read about my previous post about “who am I ?”. You may find out whether I am a WordPress Designer or just a Web Designer.

All Rounded Freelancer, CanYou Name One Here?

I also don’t know why? All the clients are using a blog. Funny right? Or, can we say that everyone like to be a blogger nowadays? I got no idea. Faith? they all using wordpress too … I think this is not good for a freelancer because this may limited his source of clients.

I think if you want to be a freelancer, you need to be all rounded. Flash, Photoshop, After Effects, CSS, JavaScript etc. He/she need to have good design sense, color sense and also well organized coding style. Besides, he/she also need to be able to build a system on his/her own. Lastly, he/she need to have good imagination to create high quality motion graphic and video/animation. Wow…sound like our local vacancy’s requirements, right?

My concern

For me, I never meet a person like this. I only meet who have good design skill and sense or someone who good in coding. It is nearly impossible to find someone like that and further, they only offer not more than RM 5,000 for a person who have those kind of god skills. Can you believe it? This is also one of the reason why I am not so eager to learn something new now. I prefer to focus more on what I am doing now. which is blog and design.

I just worry that if I get started something new now, I will forget what I know now. Or, I may lost interest in what I am doing now. So, Web Designer? Blog Designer or Freelancer? I will go for Web Designer which focus on wordpress. I am not saying the other two are wrong. You have the right to choose where to go. Each of us have our own destiny.

Real Life

Dream is still a dream. Sometimes, we just can’t avoid from it. I may be one of the local full time freelancer soon. Our maid is going back to her country soon. She is helping my mum to take care of my sister all the while. We are looking for new maid but it take minimum 3 months to get a new one. So, I got no choice but to quit my current job and work on something that I can work from home. So, freelancer will be my first option now. If I can choose, I still prefer to work under a company, in a group.

Before I know about this technique, I was using different images for each of the button I needed in a navigation bar. I found that it is not user friendly and also need more CSS coding. Besides, it is increasing the processing time and bandwidth in loading a site. In this tutorial, I will show you how to code the navigation bar using only 1 image. I will not cover the image creation part because I think you should know how to do that after follow few of my tutorials in the past. So, start here…

The Image

I will not show how to create this but I will let you guys download the psd file as a reference. I provided 4 types of colors as default, you can edit them according to your preferences. Download the psd here and I even prepared the slices for you. What you need in building the navigation menu is only a 493px X 24px image like below.

Before we start, head over and see what we are going to achieve from this tutorial.

Concept

The concept of the sliding door is to use a background image for the buttons in a navigation menu. I am using a span within a link in the list to hold a part of the image. the link itself will hold another part of it. Which means, the important part will be the background-image position.

HTML

1
2
3
4
5
6

<ul class="blue">

    <li><a href="#" title="blog">blog</a></li>
    <li><a href="#" title="contact">contact</a></li>
</ul>

This is a normal code to create a list. I assign a class for the <ul> (unorder-list) so that I can easily reuse the whole thing with different style but same structure.

1
2
3

5

<ul class="blue">
    <li><a href="#" title="home" class="current"><span></span>home</a></li>

    <li><a href="#" title="contact"><span></span>contact</a></li>
</ul>

Now, I add in a <span> for each of the link to hold the left hand side of the background image.

CSS

1. <ul> - Unorder-List

1

We need to make list-style as none because no image for any list within it. I use a float left here because I am going to use float left for the <span> and also <li>. I am not going to define a width for it because this is just a sample.

For your information, you need to define a width for the container which you had float it.

2. <li> - List

Like what mentioned just now, there is a float for the list. padding right for 15px is for the space between the edge of the image and the link text. The margin here is for the space between the list.

Quote from the publisher

It’s brimming with tried and tested real-world Photoshop solutions that will add impact to your next web design project. If you’ve ever been stuck for inspiration, have puzzled over just how to create a shiny aqua-style button, or wanted to create that seamlessly tiling background image you saw on a site recently, you need download this book.

I read the ebook already. Frankly, nothing very special or amazing. But, the basic is there. I think most of us are self taught. We learn from tutorials, articles or some other resources that we can easily get from internet. I found that, what we really need is the basic. Taken from a Chinese Phrase ” Don’t try to fly before you can walk”. Our parents also gave us such advise when we are young.

Overall, this is still a useful source for the web designer especially me who lack of basic in using photoshop. It give example on how to save images for web and something about transparency images. Well, get one and read more. Cheers!

have you ever been to this site before? I visit their site for so many times already but I still keep re-visit because of the attractive order form they have. I visit their site and keep tweak around the sliders to figure out how they calculate the prices. The first impression when I visit a site is always based on the interface design. W3 markup have a very clean and direct structure interface that allow users to find out what they want. I like their tag line - “code is art”. I just love it!

Introduction

W3 Markup, based on the name you can expect it is a site that provide something related to web development. Yes, they provide service which help you to convert your web design in PSD to HTML. beside, they also offer “Re-slicing” of existing sites (bring old code up-to-date). Well, this is also what I offer to my clients. Besides, they also provide the client intranet as a tool to facilitate easy management of multiple projects.

The Powerful Order Form

I would like to talk more about the order form they provide. It is simply amazing, I like it so much. The beauty of this ajax order form is clients and request based on their requirements which means you can 100% control the code style and preferences. What you need to do is to tweak the slider according to your projects’ scale and time line you and offer. No doubt, bigger scale with limited time line will cost more. Other than that, you also can customize it based on layout, coding, software implementation and some advance option such as favicon, preferred javascript library and etc. After you get all what you need, you can directly make a payment and wait for the end result come to you.

They take care of every tiny elements and requirements that needed in web development. This is a very effective way to show that “we are professional, we are capable and we and handle your projects nicely”. I have some kind of feeling like I am interactive with a human-a-like form. It is good enough to take care of my requirements. In the other hand, it also cut down a lot of time from the developer site to negotiate and discuss with the clients. A very straight forward concept. Order, pay and get.

Conclusion

This is a good site and they provide some excellent services. Nowadays, it is hard to get a web site which is cross browser (especially I.E6), SEO friendly and with valid CSS/XHTML. Personally, I always make sure my coding is up to this standard. I will try my best and maintained my concept and principle in my future tasks!

What do you think about web design? You can find the articles related to “how to” do web design everywhere by mentioning as “top tips” or else. However, I did read it and find it useful. I recommend them to those who are willing to step into this field or those who can’t get himself on the hot list for quite a long time. Here, I will giving some tips from my point of view and also some will be taken from other experienced web designers. I am not saying that I am so pro in this field and want to act here but just wish to share my opinion and tips.

1. Structuring

I found that this is even more important than what kind design you are going to use. To get this done, I need to do some analysis and research about the site I am going to build. For example, target users, functions, Colors and always see from the users’ side. After I gather all the information, then I can only start drawing out the layout and decided what to focus and what isn’t important.

2. Sketching

So we all know, we do our job in Photoshop or other softwares. But, before that, I recommend that we start by using a pencil and papers. I prefer to sketch out the layout and write down the important notes we need. This will always save me a lot of times to try in Photoshop directly.

3. Concept

Do not try to put all the nice design elements that you get from the popular sites in one page. This will not make your site perfect but may destroy the whole site. For example, kailoon.com, I am using some elements that related to stone age and I avoid all fancy things and also those orb effects or reflection which considered as web 2.0 must used elements. (actually, web 2.0 is all about reflection also, it is more on the function wise). It will only makes the whole thing not match to each others and i usually describe this as a “rojak site”. Means “mixing the trendy elements” into one “bowl”.

I prefer to use the concept based on the logo. It is because, the first thing people will see when browsing a site is the logo, top left or even center. Then only he will continue to navigate the site. So, the logo concept will easily go into their mind and influence the rest of the reading. For example, If the logo is something smooth, soft or light. I will choose something relevant and use some different style on the important section to attract attention. The elements you can used based on the logo are the colors, style and perspective.

4. Web Usability

Is kind of how you judge whether it is a good web design or not. A fantastic web design but users find no where to navigate it and a normal, clean web design interface and users can easily understand the message and navigate. Which will your client go for? Combination of both advantages? Here is an interesting comic to explain it. And you also can refer to what Jakob Nielsen talk about usability.

make it short, even thought your web interface is very nice and creative. People can’t navigate it and leave, then your works and efforts will be wasted. means useless!

5. Consistency

The main thing in my mind when doing design job is the consistency. I know this maybe also defined as “same, boring, not creative” by some of you. but the thing is, inconsistency can makes your users lost when navigating your site. I also prefer to use not more than 3 types of fonts (left side of the example)in a web design. This also make the whole site look more balance and look like all under one roof. Else, it will become like what you see on the right hand side.

6. Right technology at the right time

Nowadays, people like to use mootools or ajax to create some nice effects. But, is it all necessary? I admit that the effects look cool and I also use it in my site here. However, I just use it for a try because I never try this before. And, I use it after I I completed my web design. What I want to say is we do not decide what technology we are going to used before we decide what we are going to build. It’s not about building the solution before there’s a problem. It’s about having a problem and using the right technology to solve that problem.

I can find this mostly in the portfolio sites from the web designer who wish to show to their clients that they are capable on doing this kind of cool stuffs. Sometimes, we only need something simple and well organized to gain the confident of the clients.

7. Spacing and Padding

This is very important to make sure that your site will not look like a spam site or “rojak site”. It also help users to read your content more easily. More white space can make your interface look more clean and well organized. What we need to do is make sure there is some padding for the content with the edge of the container or frame. For example:

Conclusion

Forgive me if anything I said is wrong and you may find that I am not inserting those sites with the problems I mentioned above. I don’t want to hurt anyone and this is just my opinions and tips about web design that I learn from my experiences. Hope this article and help you. My purpose here is to share and also try to educate those clients to listen more from the web designer they hired.

Another big site had been launched after the great success of PSDtuts by Collis Ta’eed. This time, they go for website building tutorials/resources - Nettuts.com. This is a site that you MUST bookmark. Now, it is only a soft launch and the site will be updated slowly with 1 or 2 tutorials a week. Somehow, I think they will pick up the speed while people submitting their tutorials. So, if you are a web designer or web developer. You may not want to miss any of their tutorials or topics there.

Who Are They?

Collis is the founder for psdtuts who also maintaining Freelanceswitch and FlashDen. He also published a book called RockStar Freelancer. I just saw this book being featured in the Web Design Magazine. I also submit my tutorial there and luckily being accepted and published in their web.

Take As References but Not Copy Forever

I like his stuffs and his style. I knew that some of you may said that my site look similar to them. I admit that I got some influenced by them on this. But, I just feel that their style really nice and match with what I was thinking all the time. So, why not take as a reference since I still new in this field? However, there are also some part that I don’t like, so, I will use my idea to cover that.

When you cannot find a good design or style for yourself, why not try something else? Maybe not something new but at least something you never try. Who know they can give you some inspiration and you can come out with something amazing?

A Good Resources For Web Developer

At NETTUTS they will be tackling pretty much any subject to do with building websites including:

Complete step by step website builds

HTML and CSS techniques

Flash effects and techniques

Javascript and AJAX

Dreamweaver and other tools

general web development skills

So, don’t wait, head over there and read for their first tutorial in how to create a paypal payment form. This is a useful tutorial for those who wish to sell somethings online with paypal.

That’s all for today. Have a nice day!

Recently, I can’t stop myself from browsing her youtube video. She is Marie Digby. I know her because we are going to sponsor her for an event soon. She is coming to Malaysia next month! Don’t talk about this. After I know her name, I browse over youtube and holy shit! Her songs are damn nice! i can’t stop myself from listening it. I am also one of her fans in her facebook now .. haha…I was thinking is it suitable to post it here since it is not web related. But, Most of us know about her via youtube. So, what do you think?

She Is Ordinary But Unique

For me, she looks ordinary and maybe this is also the reason why we can feel that she is close to us. Not like the other superstar, like you can only “see” them but cannot “reach”. She is like the girl next door. Get what I mean? So friendly, kind and like a normal person in our community. Below is the song I most like which name “stupid for you”. This is the incomplete version where she will stop awhile because of the dog :). However, this just make the clip ,more natural and real.

Lyrics:
It’s not everday
that i find a person quite like you
perfect every way
i finally found the nerve to confess that it’s you - that i want
i don’t care if i act a fool
i would damn near beg for you !
put aside, all my pride
so don’t keep me hanging here
cause this girl is falling stupid for you..
stupid for you..

the proper thing to do
is for me to act like a lady and wait
for you to make the first move
but i don’t think you’re getting the point
that it’s you - that i want
i don’t care if i act a fool
i would damn near beg for you
put aside, all my pride
so don’t keep me waiting here
cause this girl is falling stupid for you!
oh, oh stupid for you

why’s it always feel like i am
chasing love when nothing’s there
and here i go just making the same mistake…

i’ve fallen stupid for you..

All the comments come after the first comment from Amei who asked “Does CSS code=HTML code?” Then I read some different descriptions after i explain mine. There are a lots of CSS hardcore coder out there and also web designers. I think each of them have their different point of view for CSS, XHTML or maybe Javascript and PHP. It will be fun when we compare it with pur daily life.
