Coloring Effects
July 10th, 2007 in Photo Edit, Tutorials by kailoon
Today we will have a photo edit tutorial and sure, it is simple and easy to follow as usual. I think you may see this in many music album CD cover and some artist poster or wallpaper. Ok, let’s start then.
This is the photo that I found in Google image.
If you wish to use mine, just download here.
Step 1
Open the image in PS.
Step 2
Go to the bottom of the layers palette and click on the Hue/Saturation option. Set the setting as below:
Step 3
After that, you may get this:
Step 4
Create a new layer and set it to Soft Light Blend mode. Choose a 48px hard brush and paint the new layer as shown below. You can choose the colors you like.
Step 5
Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur > 90 pixels.
Step 6
Yup, you’re done! It’s easy and now you can edit your photo yourself easily. Thanks!
Tips:
- The lower the saturation will decrease the color more.
- So, the lower the saturation will increase the visibility of the painted color.

thaaaaanks a lot yaaaaaay :ppp

Go to Image/Mode and change Indexed mode to RGB Color and you should be able to edit it.
heyy how to exactly select hue\saturation layer?? i cannot select it….like its inactive for me…
You will need to select the layer you want to convert first. Which here, will be the background image.
hi all. I don’t understand 4 step pleas are fully. thnx
)
Simply change the blend mode of the layer, then paint (using brush) like what you see from the sample above.
Thank you for the lesson very much!!!!!
thx verry much
This is really quick tutorial and very effective.. I recommend it for a lot of graphic artist that’s out there and really into coloring..
how do i set it to soft light blend mode?thanks
You can see the blend mode selection on top left of the layer palette?
This is a prett cool tutorial… nice. i guess the coloring effect will vary from pick to pick like that other dude said cuz mine end up coming out a bit less than expected… I usually convert my pics to black in white/greyscale in some manner to experiment with effects. i’ll check out that gradient idea someone posted on here too. i use Elements 7 and CS4. Thanks fer the posting!
oh and one quick question… to anyone who happens to pass by this and knows the answer: What kind of guitar (i know it’s a Gibson) is that Kimball is holding??? What model/make? i’m dying to have sumn like that but its so hard to find, even on Gibson’s website…
Normal
Clica nela e escolhe soft light. ^^
pronto.
I dont get Step 5.How can the original photo still in the same state as after Hue/saturation when you have already done Step 4?Can you please show the layer box as well while you’re doing the “blur”?Thanks!
the color layer is a new layer above the original photo.
I never get in the step 3….need more specific details about that.
one more thing, hope and waiting for your new tips and tricks ………………
thanks hi` hi`
100% fantastic !!! i am newbie in css and photoshop, so your website and tutorial are very very useful for me.
thanks ^^
Muito legal, Thanks
eu não sei falar inglês tem como traduzir……
whats da ps? where can i get it?
Thank U
very useful in your website.very very thank you so much
so uhm, this might sound neurotic, but how the heck do you fix the picture, so it opens in that Windows Media Viewer, and not in Photoshop? Mine just remains in Photoshop..Please help!
Huh? Windows Media Viewer?
You need to save it as, say, .jpg
If you keep it as .psd this is the editable photoshop file type, that will open in Ps.
your file extension is PSD right???
try saving your file as JPG…
save as>>>change file formant to JPG…
^^
Meh, when I paint over the picture, it turns out as black and white colours, please help me people!!
Check your color mode and also the foreground color
I can’t do the fourth step :S The Brush don’t have any colour.
yeah they do you just put a color on the color tablet in the bottom left corner of your tools . anyways i expected this tutorial to be just a simple hue’d picture with a gradient over it so ya proved me wrong keep up with the tutorials.

The “add comment” button on the right top corner of the comments box doesn’t work.
It should redirect the users to the Reply box, but is not doing that. I tested it in Chrome, Firefox and IE 7.
I wanted to let you know because sometimes we don’t get those little things.
ciao…
It is fixed now, thanks!
que hermoso queda *-* muchas gracias por aportar con estos tutoriales
Using a gradient with blending mode set to soft light, pretty much gives the same result.

Good………….
seraphangel: Good idea!
kailoon:
dun wana scare people mer…
hehe you should use your own pic
@> å®èŒ¹: Thanks!:)
@> Aeres: Yup, try and error is always the best way
leaving a hint of the original colours, instead go going pure greyscale, would produce more interesting hues though. Like what Loon has done here.Alternatively, you can play around with the layer order or the blending mode to see what works.
nice…:P
woot…pro is talking
hehe..yup, definitely agree with you cometh
, It is always easy to start editing with a black and white photo
sure
try it out and u can mail me the final result
Aiseh, not the first tim….
The picture by itself is edited already… Celebrity mah =p
Well, basically different pictures will get different effects according to the original state of the picture itself. For example the contrast, the lighting and stuff.
However if you want standardization, one can always make it black and white and start from there. Even then, the level and intensity of the black over the white will cause different effects…
But the techniques are roughly like what is stated in my opinion and it is up to individuals to adjust the settings to achieve the effects wanted.
Anyway, cool tutorial though, simple and understandable… =p
wow….i jz wonder if i conduct d colouring effect wf my OWE photo, izit d outlook can be d same as tis pic? kekek….hopefully it wont hav a big diff
