MY DREAM JOB
July 23rd, 2007 in Articles by kailoonAgain, today is Monday, 1st day of every week and the day which hate by most of us (I think). As I said before, I am a Graphic Designer cum IT Officer in this company. According to the designation, you can know that I am the most wanted person for many companies who always ask for multitasking IT guys or employees. I do the IT support, Graphic Design, Web Design, Security system, Linux Local Server maintenance and also photographer. Sound like I want to shout out here is it?
Hehe… Tell you 1 thing, I enjoy this kind of job because I really can learn something but only for the initial stage. After 3 months here, I already get boring with this. Why? Because I am the only person to discuss with! Every thing I have to handle myself and no one will give you suggestion or even understand what the problem is.
There is few things always in my mind when I come to this point. Every weekend I open The Start newspaper (classified) and look for job and the requirements. For our job, Designer:-
- Work independent.
- Think out of the box.
- Fresh grade are encouraged to apply.
- Multitasking and able to meet dateline.
- How can a fresh graduate able to work independent?
- Everyone look for someone who can think out of the box, how you define someone is either out or in the box? Who set the box?
- Further, multitasking is almost a must.
Don’tyou think there is some conflict there?
Luckily, you are able to meet their requirement and secure for the job but how much you think they will pay you? RM 2k to be a super newbie? Well, you will get to sign a paper which stated that your probation period is 6 month with RM1.5k basic salary. Increment after confirmation but depend on your performance and experiences. RM 1.5k, what can you does with this. For the petrol to feed your cars which fetch you to office through Malaysia Mega Build traffic system? To pay for toll? To pay the parking compound? I have no idea with this. I won’t talk much with this because this really drive me crazy.
After you take the job then you become the superman. You need to sit in front a mirror and discuss with HIM. Always say yes and follow the instruction on the design which set by your boss. So, later you will find that the boss is the person who thinks out of the box and who able to work independently because he never asks for your help. He just orders you to follow. Now, you noticed that the person they wanted is actually your boss himself.
For me, I always dream to work in a team where I can always discuss and exchange opinions. I don’t think this is kind of not independent. At least we got someone to listen to us, this is very important for our mind development especially for the youngster. This also one of my motivations comes from. I like to listen to others opinion because creative industry need huge amount of ideas. We need to learn from each others BUT not copy from each other. I found that many of our local designers like to follow other country’s trend of design and the style for the whole country also same. Sometimes just look like come from 1 designer. You can start pay attention to the poster and print media around you. You can found that those designs are almost same. We need to refer to others so we can improve ours.
Nowadays, there is not much advertisement able to catch my attention. The most impressed recently was the Digi yellow man. The idea and presentation are brilliant and effective. People can easy remember the ads and will discuss and talk bout it the next day. The comments are positive. Past few years, Petronas did a good job too but the idea and concept never change make it become bored.
I am not intending to say something bad for that designer’s work and also not to promote myself here. I just speak my thought!
“1 man can do everything but 1 team can do anything.“
Wish that our (Malaysia) multimedia & Creative industry can be one of the best in the world. Hope that this post won’t be banned.
How about you with your current work? Mind to share?
Hi, loon. I do agree your point that there are certain requirement to meet in order for you to survice in this working environment. But, you can deny it, has to face it anyway. hehe.
For my story now, I was lucky and happy with working in my current company now. Although i am fresh graduate, but my boss didnt really force us like working independant at first. He trained and guided me ver well by planning to given us different target step by step. I have been working there for only 7 months, but boss treat me nice, and bring me out whenever meeting, explain every uncertaincy whenever i feel “lost”.
In my company, one man show is not allowed. Teamwork and coordination is a must in doing our work. There are a lot of happyness whenever we need to brainstorm, solve the problem or even fight the sales target. But, when come to coordination, i would say, it really involves a lot of PR and communication skills. Sometimes, one work have to go thorugh different department, and work was hard to get approval from client. Sometimes, I feel like a sandwhich, really difficult.
But, i think take any difficulty in your life as a challenges. It will meke u feel better and more successful.
Yer, I will always give u moral support, gambateh.
@> å®èŒ¹ : Ya, work on your own in definitely more efficient. But i think is only work. when come to getting idea, a team may help :)
@> seraphangel : I think it isn’t your prob, is the boss din trust you and he din trust himself as well. coz he hire you:P a disscuss, can be very short. If there is time limit, you may draft and get comment from them. modify what you think is suitable and acceptable. I don’t think i will give them for QC :)cause i believe that we need to be confident with our work :)
@> Cometh: yup,all must click. sure :D Jui Gai Pak Dong.hahahahaha. We discuss and work independently, lol….focus on ur strength part, ask each other whenever confuse occured, teach each other and learn from each other :P
wow! ur multitasking is wider and wider :o
That is why for a team to be successful, all must “click”.. Right loon? HAhahaha..we can consider “Jui Gai Pak Dong” or not??? hahahaha
=p
P/S: I also understand what u mean by superman..hahahaha I am also quite considered superman. Currently, I am like the photographer, the admin assistant, the flash designer, the graphic designer, the multimedia trainer, the IT technician, and Academician all rolled into one. Yours Truly… LOL
Up Up and AWAY!!!!!! =p
Sometimes I like to work on my own. (I’m still a student.) I think that (sometimes) I am able to work more efficiently and effectively that way. HOWEVER, what is nice about being in a team is that you get to know the opinions of others. Like you think you have the best idea in the world, but it turns out that it’s not really.
neh, we are not 24 hours operate :) but the next morning I will get mad.
one thing is the worst of IT officer life, mid night system down, i need to come back…due to my company are doing service line, 24 hour operate…
how bout urs?
@> Cometh: Haha…I watch the ads before, so cute!:D
@> Elaine: -_-…director…sounds good but actually…s**k…
@> Yohjon: lol…government?no need la, governemnt wont let u in wan since u are not “their kind”.we can only work hard and find the way for them and feed them :) this wont change :)
Nvr regret wat u’r doing right now, ther may hav its value in future..create wat u tin is good, innovative n billiant..bt tis might not meet client’s needs..bring them in n persuade them wf ur owe inspiration..government gona put more effort into animation design now..is time 4 urs to present…^_^ Dun let ur burning fire turn off…go ahead man!
Hey u forgot to voice out that u r the director for the VCD shooting as well… hahaha!!!!!! multitasking mah!!!!!!!
Heh, you design what the client want you to design… =p
Set up your own advertising company man…. =p with no hierarchy of command. Everyone equal and free flow of ideas.
Although there must always be a hierarchy but that is for the sole purpose of management. Other than that, all are equal eh. =p
Speaking of Digi advertisement yellow man, there is this funny one about the yellow man kena bullied by the big blue celcom guy..hahaha..damn hilarious.
@> Aeres: thanks pal, definitely agreed :) this blog really make me feel better and my life become more cheerful because of you guys here :) Thanks!
@> Calvyn: Yup, I also did what you said when I free. Freedom is there and I can learn something by myself online but self learning is limited. Discussion is the most important and improve faster :)
KaiLoon…i have not much creative. but i will know ur feel, i am also IT Officer in a company, no team mate, no discussion. Everything 1 man show.
My job slidely easy then yours, i no need design, no need be photographer, and no linix for me to learn…
when i free, i use my time to blog, and play around software myself, such as setup a server my self… this is the advantage of our job, freedom!!!..
but u going to change job too, cos can’t stand the conventional idiot here.(a lot). their Thinking are out dated, some more dun 1 heard advice. damm
I feel you man, I really do. The creative person can only be as creative as the boss allows him/her to be, such is the truth across the industry. Your job basically is to think of something HE likes.
It is not hopeless, though. You can create your own content and publish them through the ultimate free medium (The Internet); it’ll be all your own designs, your own imagination. The downside is, it’ll take a while to figure how to make money out of it…
